Abstract
Adolescence is a developmental period during which self-centeredness is thought be prevalent. Self-centeredness is a feature of both egocentrism and narcissism; however, the correlates and behavioral implications of these constructs may differ. This study investigated the convergent and divergent correlates of narcissism and egocentrism in a community sample of 165 adolescents (115 female, 48 male, 2 gender minority) ages 12-18 (M = 14.45, SD = 1.67). Scores on narcissism and egocentrism were normally distributed in this sample, indicating that high levels of narcissism and egocentrism may not be typical during adolescence. A component of egocentrism (i.e., personal fable) was negatively associated with internalizing problems, whereas a component of narcissism (i.e., vulnerable narcissism) was positively associated with such problems. Personal fable was also positively related to risk-taking, and grandiose and vulnerable narcissism were each related to higher self-reported aggression. Therefore, egocentrism and narcissism both seem to relate to negative indicators of adjustment but in somewhat different ways. These findings may have implications for interventions aimed at reducing risk-taking, internalizing symptoms, and externalizing problems in adolescents.
