Abstract
This thesis analyzes whether family responsive policies affect companies’ financial outcomes. Some support for the Business Case for Work-Life Balance has previously been found, but direct measures of financial success have not been explored for companies with family responsive policies in the U.S. If companies are going to implement family responsive policies they need to know how it will affect their bottom line. Using data from a 2011 survey of EEO-1 companies, combined with publicly available financial data, I examine how a family responsive policy is related to annual revenue and company creditworthiness rating. Existence of a family responsive policy is not associated with higher annual revenue for companies; however, neither is it associated with lower annual revenue. Family responsive policy has a moderately negative relationship to company creditworthiness rating. This finding is likely a result of data limitations. Interestingly, a significant positive association is found between percentage of female employees and creditworthiness rating. The results of this study do not support the idea that companies receive financial bonuses for implementing family responsive policies. However, companies do not experience financial setbacks either for implementing family responsive policies. Advocates of family responsive policies should shift their focus from highlighting financial incentives to highlighting social responsibilities of companies.
