Abstract
A prior pilot study of a clinical nurse practitioner setting revealed a high incidence of missed substance abuse screening. In this subsequent study the researcher introduced clinic Family Nurse Practitioners to a first intervention substance use screening tool and informed the Family Nurse Practitioners of a screening trial and data collection comprising a 3D-day period. Practitioners participated in RAPS screening use less than 8% of the time, compared to assessments rates of24% in the previous study. However, in this study, Family Nurse Practitioners consulted with Psychiatric Nurse Practitioners 11% of the time, and some Family Nurse Practitioners recorded informal substance use assessments 26% of the time. Future research suggestions are offered.
