Abstract
The current study was designed to examine Girls on the Run (GOTR), an experiential learning and running program for girls in 3rd - 5th grade. In 2012, a partnership developed between Washington State University (WSU) and Girls on the Run Puget Sound (GOTRPS) to develop and implement an evaluation of the program and its effectiveness. Utilizing Self-Determination Theory (Deci & Ryan, 2000) framework, the program's curriculum, stakeholder input, and focus group data, relevant constructs were identified and a survey instrument developed. Participants (N = 96) were given a survey in the pre-posttest format. The hypotheses were: H1) Emotional self-efficacy, prosocial norms, perceived competence, and physical self-worth would change from pre- to post-test evaluation, H2) Higher perceptions of autonomy support would be positively related with higher emotional self-efficacy, prosocial norms, perceived competence, and physical self-worth, and H3) Autonomy support would predict changes in participant's responses between pre- and post-tests. Findings indicate that participation in GOTR was associated with higher levels of emotional self-efficacy and physical self-worth. Also, higher perceptions of autonomy support were positively related to higher emotional self-efficacy, perceived competence for physical activity, and physical self-worth at post-season. Furthermore, higher perceptions of autonomy predicted increases in emotional self-efficacy. This initial program evaluation pilot study shows promising outcomes associated with participation in GOTR.
