Abstract
This thesis presents the results of paleoethnobotanical and zooarchaeological analysis of thirteen bulk soil samples from House 1 at DgRv-006, a pre-contact Late Period site located on Galiano Island, British Columbia. The purpose of this study is to determine if feasting activity took place in House 1 at DgRv-006 during the Late Period. The central hypothesis is if feasting activity took place, consumption remains within a central hearth feature should be non-daily consumption foods. Paleobotanical analysis focused on the identification of wood taxa within House 1 at DgRv-006, and zooarchaeological analysis also focused on the identification of fish and shellfish taxa remains within the structure. Wood taxa was identified through the microscopic examination of wood charcoal fragments greater than 4 mm (millimeters) in size. Low and high-powered microscopy techniques were employed to identify each charcoal fragment to species when possible and to more generic taxon (genus or family) when not. Shellfish and fish taxa were identified to genus or species level in the 1/4 inch (6 mm) and 1/8 inch (3 mm) screen fraction. Results of these analyses indicate that a centrally-located hearth within the house differs from domestic patterns, supporting an interpretation that this centrally-located hearth includes remains of a large feasting event.
