Abstract
There are times when dialogue stalls and filler words vocally cushion the time for individuals to locate a desired formation of words. This thesis addresses a personal self-analysis of speech in hopes of finding common ground with viewers; it is based upon an installation comprised of crocheted fibers on view in the WSU Museum of Art April 4 - May 6 2017. Filler words are captured in these crocheted forms and arranged within the gallery in such a way they encourage viewers to navigate through the installation. Other topics explored include importance of writing and reading as a visual experience, location and perspective of the viewer, the effect of color on perception, as well as the influence of select historical and contemporary artists. The implications of this self-analysis encourages an awareness of the vocal pauses in language while the mind remains active in searching for desired words. This body of work allows viewers to participate in a personal moment of limbo. A walk through the installation mimics the silent navigation of an internal process of locating speech.
