There is an increasing problem of obesity among children in the United States. Obesity in children increases the risk of pediatric hypertension. This article provides an overview of pediatric obesity and hypertension. It also reviews the nurse practitioner's (NP) role in assessing, diagnosing, managing, and treating children with obesity and hypertension. Strategies are also presented to assist the NP when working with obese hypertensive children and their families. It is essential that children with hypertension be aggressively treated to avoid short-term consequences and end-organ damage.
