Abstract
Vocabulary learning is a major challenge facing English language learners. This study investigated whether there is a relationship between Arabic students’ perceptions of the immediate feedback and the application, their use of a morphology online application, and their vocabulary learning. A convenience sample of 6 Arabic students learning English as a second language in a language center in the U.S. participated in this small-scale exploratory study by using an online morphology app and completing three vocabulary tests (i.e., pretest, posttest, one-week delayed posttest). To explore the topic in depth, the participants’ use of the app was recorded by screencast and they were interviewed afterward about their use and perceptions. Results of the repeated measures ANOVA showed that there was a statistically significant improvement in students’ vocabulary learning across the vocabulary tests. The posttest scores and one-week delayed posttest scores were significantly greater than the vocabulary pretest scores. The screencasts showed that the students who spent more time reading the immediate feedback had the highest scores. The interview results indicated that Arabic students perceived the use of immediate feedback in a morphology software application as useful for their English vocabulary learning.
