Abstract
Laser Surface Modification of SS410 was carried out using LENSTM, a solid freeform fabrication technique. Two distinct types of microstructures under different laser processing conditions were observed. Laser deposition carried out at higher energy led to porous microstructure, however lower laser energy led to formation of sound defect free microstructure. There was an increase in hardness for all composite coatings due to formation of intermetallics. Thermal conductivity (TC) measurements showed that there is 43% increase in TC for low laser energy samples. This increase has been attributed to the presence of SiC. Also, wear tests showed that pore free microstructures, with retained SiC, can improve the wear resistance of samples by approximately two orders of magnitude. Laser processing of SiC on cp-Ti was carried out at three different laser processing conditions. All samples showed significant retention of SiC in composite coating.
