Abstract
The goal of this research is to identify new technologies that fit under the umbrella of Augmented Reality that might be useful to the landscape architecture design process and understand how and at which stages of the design process they might be applied. Future developments of the technology within the context of landscape architecture are explored through a design fiction followed by testing the potential of existing applications to achieve the illustrated level of future development. Both Marker Based and Geospatial Based Augmented Reality Applications were explored and evaluated for potential use within the landscape architecture design process. The design fiction and exploration of current applications were presented to four practicing professionals in the field of landscape architecture and evaluated for usefulness and applicability through an interview and survey. The participants rated the technology highly in general applicability to the field of landscape architecture, but were unable to see themselves or their firms adopting the technology at this time for a variety of reasons including lack of development, learning curve, and practicality of current applications. The results of the survey then were used to identify needs and create recommendations for further development of augmented reality technology specific to landscape architecture.
