Abstract
Research in counseling fields shows that intercultural couples tend to encounter difficulties in parenting due to differences in their cultural backgrounds and may negatively influence on their children. In addition, research also shows that these couples have communication issues in their relationships due to the unavailability of common language as well as cultural differences in communication style. Thirteen Japanese mothers who married to European American husbands were recruited for interviews. Each interview was held in-person in a semi-structured interview style for about two hours. All interviews were recorded and transcribed in Japanese and later translated in English. Grounded theory approach was utilized for data analysis with three coders for each interview data. The findings suggest that differences in cultural background do not always lead to difficulties in parenting. Furthermore, in order to manage difficulties in parenting in the United States, engagement of coparenting was involuntarily accelerated. They also had more opportunities to communicate to obtain and maintain shared goals and compensate communication issues. No difficulties were found in their communication and couples managed to compensate for differences in communication style and accommodate themselves to differences in values and opinions. Moreover, benefits and advantages were also found in these intercultural couples.
