Abstract
Currently, MR dampers with electromagnets (EM) are the main type of devices with MR- fluid to provide linear damping and braking forces. The EM devices are simple in structure and easy to control, but consume significant amount of energy and hard to miniaturize. Therefore, use of permanent magnets (PM) in the design of a linear MR-brake (MRB) can be a potential improvement. The main goal of this research was to design and manufacture a compact linear MRB with PMs. A prototype device has been manufactured. Dynamic response, curve following, force profile, hysteresis and control experiments have been conducted. The results indicate that use of PMs in such a linear brake is a viable option as it can lead to a relatively compact device with a large braking force. However, faster response with shorter time constant remains to be improved. This can be achieved using slightly larger motors and with some structural alterations of the design. The device uses only 2.1 J of energy to engage the brake and maintains high damping force with 0 power consumption. A similar brake with EM activation needs up to 1.7 W to keep the same damping force.
