Malaria is one of the most serious threats to health worldwide. It is a complex, but curable and preventable infection. For decades considered a ''tropical'' disease, malaria is now a re-emerging disease, even in the United States. Changing weather patterns, surging immigration and increasing travel to endemic areas are increasing the spread of malaria. With more providers caring for traveling or foreign-born patients, education about this disease is essential to community health. The health care provider's knowledge of risks, prevention measures combined with patient education will yield a lower incidence of the disease. Consideration of malaria in the differential diagnosis will aid in early detection and treatment. Prompt diagnosis and appropriate treatment will avoid many complications and save lives. The purpose of this article is to provide a review of malaria and to discuss the pathophysiology, the transmission, clinical manifestations, laboratory diagnosis, possible complications and treatment of the disease.
