The health benefits of physical activity have been reported in the literature for many years. Suprisingly, 60% of American adults and 49% of youth (ages 12-21), are not regularly active. Health care providers are frequently counseling patients regarding the benefits of regular exercise, yet many are not measuring physical fitness in the office setting. Health related physical fitness relates directly to one's health status. Health. care providers are directly involved with this type of fitness because of its evident correlation with health promotion and disease prevention. Lack of physical activity and exercise has been associated with an increase in cardiovascular disease, obesity, and musculoskeletal problems. Health care providers are in a key position to assess, and measure physical fitness in adults and ultimately track their progress. A pre-exercise evaluation needs to be completed prior to customized exercise prescription. This questionnaire alerts health care providers that further evaluation is needed prior to instructions for improved fitness. There are five components of health related physical fitness: body composition, aerobic capacity, muscular strength and endurance, flexibility, and balance. These components can be objectively assessed in the primary care setting in order to provide tailored exercise prescriptions. As well as having a motivating effect for individuals, participants can make changes in their exercise habits and improve their overall fitness. The participant's score is compared with normative tables, providing information regarding their fitness level. The five components of health related physical fitness can be measured routinely with improvement noted. The tools used to measure the components of physical fitness will be discussed as well as recommendations for use in the primary care setting.
