Abstract
The systemic structure of design organizations is a critical factor in the resultant design outcomes. Variation of communication between design group entities is necessary for accurately modeling these organizations. Empathy is an accurate metric for quantifying this variation in communication. Modeling complex properties through simple programs can illuminate emergent patterns and system properties that defy traditional modeling methods. Modeling empathy as a variation from single state one way communication to a fully dualized closed loop feedback system is an effective method for introducing empathy as a metric of communication variation into organizational models. A model of the basic empathic binary of the communicative link between two individuals in an organization was created to test the effect of varying empathy in different organizational structures. Models were created for a large serial communication chain, a large parallel communication group, and a small design group comprised of serial and parallel communicative links. The results of the model demonstrate that communication variance can be modeled with an empathic communication factor and that the variation of communication in even a single link of the organizational structure.
