Abstract
Despite the long history of reading and interpreting fairy tales uniformly, the inherent intertextual nature of the fairy tale allows the genre the ability to both inhabit and reflect sociocultural concerns and realities present in different historical periods, and in different audiences within those periods, thereby rejecting any one, singular reading, notwithstanding the enduring dominance of certain, usually patriarchal, interpretations. In this project, I examine the rich tradition of feminist revisionist literature based upon the "Bluebeard" fairy tale, in an effort to demonstrate how this genre of fiction reflects ideologies and generational changes present within second and third wave feminisms. As can be expected, since feminism is in no way a monolithic movement, feminists display differing attitudes toward many aspects of feminist philosophy, both within particular generations of the movement and from generation to generation. Therefore, this project seeks to analyze the ways in which feminist revisionist authors present varying and changing perspectives toward pornography, female desire, heterosexual sex, and the potentialities for relations between men and women more broadly in their rewritten fairy tales.
