Abstract
Catastrophic outages of electric power systems lead to huge losses in both economy and society. There are various reasons for the power outages. The number of incidents due to weather related events is increasing over years. The economy cost is increasing due to damages in the power infrastructure and it is affecting a large number of customers. Some of the weather related events are Winter Storm (2013), Superstorm Sandy (October 29, 2012), Hurricane Irene (August 27, 2011), Hurricane Ike (2008), etc. There are methods to reduce the storm related outages; for example, tree trimming, undergrounding the distribution/transmission lines, deployment of the smart grid, installation of distributed generators, and frequent maintenance.
