Optimized planning of gas-electricity interdependent systems with renewable energy integration

The electric power sector has become the largest consuming sector of the natural gas nowadays. Driven by decreasing prices of natural gas, the increasingly stringent environmental regulation, and the relatively short ramp rates, modularity and scalability of natural gas-fired generations, the majority of new power generating capacity projected for the next decade is expected to utilize natural gas as its primary fuel. However, the increased reliance on natural gas could intensify the electric power systems exposure to shortcomings in natural gas supply and delivery systems. So we need to take into account the natural gas infrastructure in the planning of the power systems. Moreover, the electric power itself is experiencing a great change leaded by the development of digital and information technology. In the supply end, the renewable energy like the wind turbine and solar panel are increased greatly. In the demand end, the demand response program is on the way. Although these technologies have great advantages, like zero-carbon emissions, economic benefit, they also bring many challenges to the traditional electric power system. It add additional variability and uncertainty to the power system, which can pose new challenges for utilities and system operators. Also, the renewable energy tax credit caused by uncertainties of regulatory policies would effect the planning decisions of the investor. In this thesis, a bi-level model is proposed for the investor to make planning decisions in the long term. A single level mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) model is developed further in the way of converting bi-level problem to the single level problem with the idea of mathematical programming problem with equilibrium constraints (MPEC) and Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) condition. An 8-bus power system combined with a 6-node natural gas system is employed to demonstrate the essential features of the developed model and method. A highly efficient commercial solver CPLEX is employed to solve the proposal problem. The proposed planning mode can be used by power system planners and regional regulatory authorities to determine and evaluate coordinated planning for electricity and natural gas infrastructures.
