Abstract
Language barriers in health care is a growing problem in the United States. According to the U.S Census Bureau, over 47 million Americans do not speak English very well; it is also estimated that nearly 23 million speak little or no English. Hence, health care providers often find themselves caring for patients who have limited or no English proficiency. The purpose of this paper is to educate primary care providers about issues that accompany language barriers between the providers and patients with limited English proficiency and propose strategies to decrease the barriers while providing safe patient care.
