Parent-child interaction factors : predictors of infant emotion regulation

Abstract
Emotion regulation refers to the cognitive, behavioral, and psychological processes that allow individuals to modulate the experience and expression of both positive and negative emotions (Gross, 1998). Despite emerging research, it is still unclear how various factors of parent-child interaction may influence an infant's ability to behaviorally regulate their emotions during an aversive event. The current study aims to address this gap in the literature by examining how five factors of parenting (i.e., responsiveness/sensitivity, reciprocity/synchrony, tempo, intensity, and emotional tone; Gartstein, Hancock, & Iverson, 2018) influence an infant's self-soothing behavior during a laboratory task designed to elicit infant distress, the Still-Face Paradigm (SFP). Researchers developed a code for infant regulatory behaviors based on the literature (e.g., Fogel, 1982; Hornik, & Gunnar, 1988), with behaviors including the following: hand waving, kicking feet, looking to mother, banging on the table, playing with cups, hand/object to mouth, and vocalizations. Secondary data analyses were performed with existing data (N=79). Data were analyzed using correlation and regression analyses to examine associations between factors of parent-child interactions and infant soothing behavior during the SFP. Regression analyses entering all parent-child interaction factors as one step, controlling for child sex, age, and family SES, yielded non-significant results potentially due to limited sample size and issues with power. Exploratory analyses were also conducted. These findings contribute to our understanding of how parent-child interaction factors predict infant regulatory behaviors. In this way, more tailored early interventions can be developed to better assist families experiencing issues with parent-child interaction and early emotion regulation.
