Abstract
Language has the power to shape our ideas of how we understand the world around us and connect with others. However, language also roots words in a hierarchical system which places them in opposition to each other, gathering meaning through their difference. This is reflected in dated ideas of the gender binary and the dominance of masculinity over femininity. Pressing Matter focuses on the breakdown of the binary and questions this oppositional view of the world. This questioning happens through the mediums of video, performance, and printmaking at the intersection of language and the body, encouraging an embodied process of reading, emphasizing the impact of words on the body, and promoting the agency of the gendered artist.
