Older people -- Drug use Medication errors Drug utilization Chronic diseases
Poor medication adherence is a significant global problem leading to a serious public health concern. Medications are often the primary factor preventing older adults from developing serious complications from chronic illness. Poor medication adherence is the leading cause of increased health care costs, morbidity, and early death. It is crucial that health care providers take measures to improve medication taking behaviors. Health care providers, patients, and the health care system must all work together around the common goal of promoting better health outcomes. A thorough analysis of the factors using the World Health Organization's Foundational Model will facilitate health care providers' understanding of adherence, including suggesting strategies health care providers can use to improve medication adherence by working with patients to reduce or overcome barriers that lead to non-adherence.
