Abstract
This study explores potential relationships between culture and learner engagement in language tasks. Although, there have been several studies that investigated the role of culture in language learning reporting the significance of culture in the language classroom, few studies have examined what specific aspects of language learning culture might impact. With the vital role that learner engagement plays in language learning, this study investigates the relationships between learner engagement, in terms of authenticity and connection, and culture in language tasks. The purpose of this exploratory study is to investigate 1) how teachers develop and implement language learning tasks, and what they consider in developing and implementing such tasks, 2) in what ways, if any, the tasks are authentic and connected to students' cultures, and 3) how diverse students perceive their authenticity and connections in language tasks, as well as what difference to their learning they say it makes. In the findings, the data collected suggest that the inclusion of culture, alongside other possibilities such as social interaction strategies and/or use of technology in the studied language tasks, contributed to engaging the participants in these tasks. The results help fill the gap in literature about the relationship between culture and student engagement in language tasks. Key words: Culture, language
