Postpartum depression is a mood disorder that affects more than 13% of women during a pivotal point in their lives. If risk factors are acknowledged early, screening and assessment is performed, and treatment options are made available to women promptly, then potential months of suffering silently can be prevented. Not only does postpartum depression affect women, but it has been shown to have effects on her infant and partner relationships. There are many gaps in the current literature related to this topic. This paper serves to clarify, close the gaps and synthesize the current literature. The paper
explores recognition of risk factors, screening and assessment, and treatment options available to women experiencing postpartum depression.
