Abstract
This thesis, and my artwork showcased in the Masters of Fine Arts Thesis Exhibition from April 5 to May 4, 2013 in the Washington State University Museum of Art is an investigation of the importance of baseball in my life and in American culture. The game of baseball is full of players that have inspired fans and audiences in a variety of ways. Through a combination of memories, interviews with family members, research in books, newspaper articles, and on the Internet, I have explored how baseball has inspired America at an individual, family, and national level. My research describes how these baseball players are heroes; serving as idols to the people they inspire. It shows that some of the biggest baseball stars have inspired America by what they have done both on and off the field. Mickey Mantle, for example, broke numerous records, yet had a very humble beginning as the son of a lead miner. His rags-to-riches story inspired many Americans and reaffirmed an ideal this nation has come to represent: with big dreams and hard work, one can accomplish anything, regardless of social status. This kind of mindset has influenced many people of many professions in this country. It is what continues to inspire me both in my art practice and my life.
