Abstract
Indoor plants provide many benefits but maintaining a healthy indoor plant can be difficult for some people as they may forget to water the plant regularly. This research presents design of an initial prototype smart flowerpot as an Internet of Things (IoT) device for automatic plant care. The device can retrieve weather data over the internet and record sensor readings. Five control modes (manual, two automated versions, and two versions of smart care with machine learning) were tested. Plants were kept alive in all modes, but the smart care modes achieved similar results with much less water usage. In all modes, maintaining a target soil moisture level proved to be challenging.
