Abstract
This paper explores the reciprocity between interior and exterior environments. As many researchers will attest, an interior must be in the context of surrounding scales. When theses scales are connected, a more sense of place is formed for people to experience. While each scale serves a particular use, it cannot function wholly without being linked to the greater whole. the purpose of this study, therefore, was to think about the relationship of the room, or interior, in the context of the adjacent exterior space. The research investigated this phenomenon through the location of American tow squares. It was a qualitative study, which included the researcher's phenomenological reaction to the space of the square, as well as interiors around the square. The squares were documented to photograph as well. It also discusses the historical importance as being significant to the connection of scales. Finally, commonalities between squares were found in which could lead to further study of squares or possibly be applied to other exterior and interior environments.
