Abstract
Phase noise is an important characteristic for voltage controlled of oscillators (VCOs). The focus of this thesis is on an understanding of phase noise in CMOS SF oscillators in the presence of supply and substrate coupling noise. Based on simulations and measured results it is shown that supply noise is the most significant contributor to the overall phase noise of an integrated LC CMOS SF oscillators. An analytical technique for distributing the contribution of supply noise to the overall phase noise of oscillators has been developed. Using this analytical approach, the effects of supply noise amplitude and frequency on phase noise can be determined. The technique is verified with measured results for a set of 1.6 GHz integrated LC oscillators fabricated in a 0.35 µm CMOS process. Good agreement is obtained between the analysis and results and experimental data. A generic framework for analyzing the effect of supply and substrate noise oscillators is also presented.
