Abstract
Exposure to descriptive norms may encourage individuals already practicing healthy behaviors to adopt unhealthy behaviors in an attempt to conform to the collective norm. Yet, exposure to both descriptive and injunctive norms may alleviate this boomerang effect. A posttest-only, 2 (gender)×3 (condition) experimental design involving 394 college students was used in this study to test the effects of the social norms on students' perceptions, attitudes and behavioral intentions concerning sexual consent. Results indicate use of both types of norms has a stronger effect on perceptions and intentions than the use of only descriptive norms. Therefore, both types of norms should be used in interventions geared to promote sexual consent seeking.
