The objective of this research project is to examine the scope of depression in the US and to evaluate obstacles facing the primary care practitioner. Several areas are discussed the first is a general definition of depression. This is followed by an examination of issues facing the primary care practitioner in diagnosing and treatment in the primary care setting. Some of the barriers which are discussed include time, knowledge, managed care, diagnostic instruments, treatment and education. Several primary care models are examined including education, quality improvement, integrated primary care, and a roadmap designed for the primary care practitioner. The conclusion includes recommendations for further research.
