Abstract
This paper is about my approach to making and exploring. My work is part mapping and abstraction; part advertising and physical. All of my work comes from the mountains, as I am fanatical about them as a setting. I think about making as an exploration of media and design, while coming to terms with spatial events. I draw upon my experiences in the outdoors. Growing up in the flatlands of Illinois, the mountains were both a source of both fantasy and play. Color and composition are used in a manner to evoke playfulness and enjoyment that stem from my experiences with the outdoors. In addition to reflecting on my experiences with the outdoors, the current work also references advertising and consumerism of the outdoor community. In the work, the correlation might not be immediately seen; the choices of composition and color come greatly from outdoor advertising. The imagery is falling apart, disintegrating, or masked. Environmental issues surface out of the destruction of nature and other losses that I feel. But competing with that sense of loss are the bright colors and playfulness visible in his work.
