Abstract
This thesis examines the “Philosophy of Integralism” in Sri Aurobindo Ghose's thought. The areas of metaphysics, epistemology and religion have been dealt with especially.
The first chapter indicates the object of the thesis, examines Sri Aurobindo's life, points out his significance as a philosopher and gives an initial statement of what “Integralism” means.
Chapter two presents the philosophic task Sri Aurobindo is faced with in constructing an “Integral Philosophy,” namely, the controversy between East and West over intuition and intellect.
The theory of “Integral Evolution” which is the basis for his comprehensive metaphysical synthesis is presented in chapter three.
A critical estimation of Sri Aurobindo's theory of “Integral Evolution” is given in chapter four. Here it is shown that the primary principles of ascent, descent, and integration of his theory while plausible, do have inherent difficulties when subjected to confirmation and experiential verification.
Chapter five is the conclusion and indicates what we take to be Sri Aurobindo's contribution to philosophy and the further need for integral philosophizing.
