Abstract
Listening to music is one of the many activities that people do in their daily lives. It is important in people's social and interpersonal communication. Previous studies show that popular music has tremendous impacts on people's social and cognitive performance. Therefore, how popular music is used and the gratification it offers becomes a crucial question. Assuming all music listeners are active, the uses of popular music are largely based on listeners' music listening habits and preferences including their social and emotional needs rather than passive accepting of any type of music. Media entertainment, mood management, self-identity and interpersonal communication were drawn from Uses and Gratifications (U&G) theory and examined in this project. Specially, it was examined whether difference of music genres have different impacts on U&G factors. In addition, the individualistic/collective difference raised by Adonro assumed that it could affect the mainstream/subcultural music listening preferences. This assumption was tested as well. The results support the hypothesis that entertainment and mood management are the primary functions of music. Another finding is that music selection depends heavily on "specific mood-related needs". The study also discovered that mainstream and indie/subcultural music listeners have differences on individualism
