Abstract
The topic that this project originally aimed to address was whether or not it is possible to successfully create music for a video game without any formal training in electronic media composition. If so, how viable of an option is it? This is obviously a broad subject matter, so this particular project was narrowed to a study of pre-existing game music and an exploration in composing effective music for a specific genre of game. The project began with a prompt for a game that is currently in development and in need of music. Research would determine how the project would be completed. This research would take place through notes that were taken on the important traits of several successful games in the horror genre, with some being big-budget titles and others being indie games that are highly recommended by its players. From these observations, conclusions were drawn as to what goes into the construction of quality horror game music. Finally, a work was composed and recorded based on the results of the research. The work was meant as a medley of ideas and thematic material that would be able to be expanded upon and then used in the final game. Once this project is completed and the game is put together, the final product will function as a résumé builder, which may lead to a future career in game sound.
