Abstract
Three original jazz compositions arranged and orchestrated for standard jazz big band instrumentation and comprising a variety of styles and performance skill levels are presented in full transposed scores. Spring Just Ain't the Same Without You is a blues shuffle with an extended dominant section in triple meter that is appropriate for exceptional high school or college bands. The arrangement features alto saxophone and bass solos. Mondo Burrito is a Latin style composition designed for junior high school level players. Line independence is a feature and educational goal of this pedagogical piece. Solo opportunities are provided for tenor saxophone and trumpet. Ozone is a modal, up-tempo chart designed for university level ensembles. Non-functional harmonic structures are enhanced through the use of quartal voicings and exploration in changes of texture. A written out saxophone section cadenza leads into the piece and solo opportunities for piano, guitar and saxophone are provided with varied backgrounds.
