Abstract
This thesis discusses the work in the Master of Fine Arts exhibition, on display from April 4th to May 7th, 2016, at the Museum of Art at Washington State University. This body of work examines the relationships between people in survival situations, the complexities of what it means to survive, and how the human instincts of both aggression and camaraderie manifest themselves naturally and simultaneously. This is done through the lens of a "single-frame narrative" - a complex composition that involves many figures, struggling together, caught in a single moment in time, with no expositional text. This work examines how much visual information we need, and what tropes we can recognize, to understand what we see that is happening in a single image.
