Insomnia is defined as a complaint of difficulty falling asleep, maintaining sleep, or experiencing non-restorative sleep. Because insomnia is a problem which affects more than 50% of the population at some point in their lifetime, the economic and social cost of the problem is felt on a large scale as well as an individual one (DiPiro et aI., 2005). A detailed patient history is important in diagnosing a patient's insomnia with accuracy. Scientific progress of recent years has provided clinicians with new pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic options to treat insomnia, allowing healthcare providers to tailor treatments for this problem which are specific to the individual.
