Abstract
Under the Hood is an exploration of the rural blue-collar garage culture that formed my identity growing up, including the dichotomy of masculine and feminine constructs of genders. The male dominated environment I grew up in carried with it clearly defined gender roles that went along with our blue-collar status. In Under the Hood I work with crocheted needlework, acrylic yarn and wax as well as car repair and customization, both passed down to me by family and community members while growing up. For me the crochet stands as a symbol of feminine domestic work and the rebuilding of cars stands for a blue-collar masculinity. The garage has a culture all its own and every car and part carries its own function and level of status. In Under the Hood, I evoke a sense of the social space of the garage culture through the conceptual layout of the installation within the physical space of the gallery.
