Abstract
A wireless ZigBee network allowing remote monitoring of humidity and temperature inside the greenhouse at Washington State University as well as allowing issuing commands for irrigation of plants in the greenhouse through the internet has been developed and demonstrated. The system included three temperature monitoring stations with specially designed circuits in order to regulate the DC output from power supply to the TMP36 sensors to overcome the effect on sensor readings. The fourth station was configured to serve as an irrigation system for a plant and was constructed by combining a ZigBee transceiver with an ATmega48P microcontroller through UART serial interface. Two HIH-5031 sensors were selected to measure the humidity difference between just above flowerpot’s soil and surrounding air. A website was set up for the green house that displayed the reading from the temperature and humidity sensors that users can log onto and based on these readings could make a decision to activate the gravity fed irrigation system. The microcontroller varied PWM signal to the servo coupled with the water valve to adjust its position. A network was constructed with a ClearOS operated gateway and Ubuntu website and MySQL servers. By introducing an applet programmed in Python to the base station computer in the greenhouse, it became possible to automatically transfer wireless sensor measurements to the MySQL database.
