Abstract
Cloud_9 is an interactive installation that invites users to cultivate their own mystical encounters experienced through bodily awareness and participation in both digital and physical environments. Live video projection allows users to see themselves within a digital landscape and provides a space for exploration and play. In Cloud_9, viewers use their bodies to push up animated clouds, change scenery and transform themselves into fairy creatures. This work takes a playful approach to concepts of folklore, mysticism, and esoteric knowledge. Embodied cognition within multiple dimensions forms connections between humans, nature, and curious invisible realms by activating awareness of self, navigating mixed realities, and encountering supernatural entities. Belief in fairies isn't required. However, the creatures reveal themselves to those who wander past the incorporeal boundary. Curiosity rewards anyone who investigates the space further by revealing hidden elements to those worthy of seeing. This work was created using computer coding, a motion sensing camera, and programmable LED lights.
