Abstract
In this thesis I examine how individuals at a northwest Evangelical church use storytelling and the metaphor of story to respond to the late modern concerns regarding authenticity, relationship, and community. Authenticity is a primary concern for individuals living in late modernity, for through authenticity one's life has unique meaning and becomes worthwhile. Through my ethnographic fieldwork, I show how individuals at Northwest Life Church tell stories from the Bible, tell stories about themselves, and use story as a metaphor to create authenticity and locate themselves in relationship with God and other humans--all the while, responding to the concerns of life in the landscape of late modernity.
