Abstract
One of the promising methods for ship drag reduction relies on air cavities generated under ship hulls. The air-cavity characteristics are sensitive to the hull geometry and flow conditions. In this paper, the effect of the hull transom on the properties of an air cavity formed behind a wedge is studied by a potential flow model. This model is based on hydrodynamic point sources distributed on the water boundary. The variable parameters include the cavity length, proximity to the transom and transom submergence. It is found that the air-cavity properties deteriorate when it is placed close to the transom, resulting in lower-pressure cavities with increased wedge pressure drag and larger amplitudes of waves behind the transom. The length of the longest cavity that can be created at a given speed and wedge geometry decreases in the vicinity of the transom.
