Abstract
"What I was finding is that I had to spend a significant amount of time talking about why higher education was important. Other institutions don't often talk about the value-added part of higher education because of having different constituents," said [Miguel Puente]. "I also found that there was a communication gap between counselors and minority groups. And the students were hesitant because they were turned back from so many opportunities in the past. So many times someone had not followed through with them or they didn't have the finances to participate in activities. College was such a new experience for these students that they weren't sure they could trust it and that it was important to them."
"I can't put a price on my education. It will take me a long way," said [Margarita "Maggie" Alejandre]. "I'd like to go back and get a master's. Then I do want to open a hair salon, but I feel I need to gain experience and go out and learn how to manage a business."
"The biggest joy I get is seeing that we have been able to prove that there is tremendous talent spread throughout populations in our county. We tend to ignore these pockets or populations -- farmworkers, members of Native American reservations and poorer parts of inner cities. We tend to say we don't know if we'd benefit from giving them opportunities," she said. "But Heritage has proved that, given the opportunities, there are tremendous rewards for communities and families when doors are opened to these students."
