Abstract

Educational Planning or Policy Immigration
Both Education Secretary Rod Paige and [Antonio R. Flores] signed the MOU. The leadership group will coordinate efforts to promote special programs and forums designed to increase Hispanic college students' achievement levels, increase the agency's participation in the HACU National Internship Program, and expand representation by Hispanic-serving institutions on the federal agency's boards and commissions. The Smithsonian's Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden is presenting more than 100 works by Cuban-born artist Ana Mendieta. The exhibit, "Ana Mendieta: Earth Body, Sculpture and Performance 1972-1985," was organized by the museums deputy director Olgo Viso and is on view until Jan. 2, 2005. The exhibition traces the artist's development from the early performance-based works she created as a student at the University of Iowa, to the creation of independent sculptures and objects made with fragile earthen materials in the early 1980s. It is accompanied by a fully illustrated 288-page catalogue co-published by the Hirshhorn and Hatje Cantz Verlag in Germany, and distributed by Distributed Art Publishers in New York. After the Mendieta exhibition continues beyond the Hirshhorn museum, its tour continues to the Des Moines Art Center (Feb. 25-May 22, 2005) and the Miami Art Museum (Oct. 7, 2005-Jan. 15, 2006). Godínez's goal is to become a producer for a network or production company after she claims her bachelor's degree. She's worked as a cursting intern for the inaugural Luckman U.S. Latino Film/Video Festival, Reel Rasquache. John Ramírez, CSULA professor of media studies and co-director of the film festival, said, "Gricelda is a most deserving person for this scholarship.... In fact, the shape and quality of the U.S. Latino Film Festival owe much to Gricelda's creativity and vision."
