Abstract
The following photos illustrate the different treatments in a field trial examining the “mow and blow” practice of cutting alley vegetation and blowing it onto the tree row to create a mulch layer. A research report was issued in 2013 describing the results of this trial. The orchard was being commercially managed other than the imposition of the different mulch treatments. The grower was using a John Deere rotary mower that came with the option to blow clippings to the side or to drop them in place. The orchard block had been planted to tall fescue, a forage grass not normally used in orchards, in order to produce a greater amount of biomass for mulch. Some kura clover seed was also included to attempt to establish a long-lived perennial legume in the stand to help supply nitrogen.
