The common barberry (Berberis vulgaris)is a woody shrub that is the alternate host for the stem rust fungus (Puccinia graminis)that afflicts wheat and barley. This WSU publication provides information on the common barberry shrub and its relationship to the stem rust pathogen as well as information on barberry shrub identification and current control methods employed in the Pacific Northwest.
