Abstract
One phase (XII) was the focus of attention this year, involving data analysis and synthesis from all seasons of Hoko Rockshelter(45CA21) excavations (1999 through 1983). The entire Hoko River Site Complex is a close spatial inter association of two distinct sites. One site, investigated for eight years, is a 3,000-2,000 years B.P. waterlogged spring-summer halibut fishing camp with excellent preservation of perishable artifacts (45CA213). More recently, National Endowment for the Humanities support provided four years of excavation in a second rivermouth site that represents the last 1,000 years of regional use and is located within an undisturbed and spacious Hoko Rockshelter (45CA21) Unlike the upriver 'wet' site, the rockshelter contains up to four meters depth of faunal-rich shellmidden. This site is the first residential camp of its size recorded in a rockshelter along the Northwest Coast of North America.
The first report is a synthesis of work at these two sites, Predictive Modeling of Prehistoric Economic Patterns in the Hoko River Region, and provides an ecological overview of the entire rivermouth area and an economic economic decision-making model reviewing both Hoko River Mouth Sites in this archaeological complex. This developing manuscript covering the entire synthesis of our research was published in 1988 in a special volume of Research in Economic Anthropology, Supplement 3, 1988.
Other reports are on updates involving the Hoko Rockshelter (45CA21) supported by The National Endowment for the Humanities: Multiphase Sampling and Determination of Economic Activities: An Example from the Hoko Rockshelter, by Kevin J. Peter; Geoarchaeology at the Hoko River Rockshelter: The Anatomy of a Shell Midden, by Barbara R. Stucki; Hoko River Rockshelter Faunal Resources, An Initial Test of the Economic Models, by Rebecca Wigen.
