Gevo has developed a process for the conversion of ethanol to olefins, in particular propylene and isobutylene. In May of 2015 Gevo process engineering completed a process model and cost estimate for a complete process based on the lab reaction stoichiometry known at the time and with the premise that multiple products should be isolated to allow for the investigation of markets for various by-products. In May, 2017 Gevo embarked on additional laboratory work funded by the NARA project. In addition to this new lab work it was desired that process engineering look at several options for process simplification. As a result the following cases were explored by process engineering.
