Polistes--Northwest, Pacific. Paper wasps--Northwest, Pacific.
As a newcomer to home landscapes in the Pacific Northwest (PNW), the European paper wasp has a reputation for being both a beneficial predator and a pest. The European paper wasp is a relatively tame wasp that forages for leaf-feeding caterpillars and other insect pests. However, it is also a nuisance pest that will sting people who accidently disturb or threaten it or its nest. This publication provides images that will help homeowners recognize the paper wasp and distinguish it from the more dangerous yellowjacket wasp. It also offers seasonal scouting tips and management strategies for living with paper wasps in the home landscape.
