Abstract
Washington State homeowners who plant apple, pear, or cherry trees on their property should know they are legally responsible for controlling insect pests because these pests are a threat to commercial orchards. Backyard cherry trees that become infested with the western cherry fruit fly (WCFF) pose an infestation threat to nearby commercial orchards, particularly in Washington State's Yakima Valley, Wenatchee Valley, and Columbia Basin. WCFF infestation can cause serious economic losses in these regions. Thus, managing this pest in backyard cherry trees is crucial. This fact sheet provides information on how to identify this fruit fly pest, as well as both chemical and nonchemical strategies for successfully controlling it when it is found in backyard cherry trees.
